The Pogues’ Shane MacGowan updated fans on New Year’s Eve in a post about his health. The 65-year-old is back home after being hospitalized with an infection in December.
MacGowan confirmed rumors that he has encephalitis, a disease in which the brain becomes inflamed.
In the Instagram video (below), MacGowan pre-confirmed his condition: “Hi friends, I’m sitting here with encephalitis.”
With his sunglasses on, MacGowan continues. “The light is killing me […] but i want to wish you a happy new year and a merry christmas. And much more and all the happiness in the world and all the love. Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, dear Shane.
MacGowan was hospitalized in December, but his wife Victoria Mary Clarke confirmed on December 15 that he was back at home.
“Thank you to everyone who sent messages and blessings to everyone who has a loved one in the hospital and who is in the hospital themselves, and blessings to the doctors and nurses! @ShaneMacGowan.”
MacGowan has been in a wheelchair since breaking his pelvis in 2015.
