Walters was born on September 25, 1929 in Boston. She was educated at Sarah Lawrence College, where she earned a degree in English. After graduating, she worked at NBC’s NYC affiliate, writing press releases. In 1953, she started as a producer and a 15-minute long children’s program called Ask the camera.
