Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has asked Russia and Ukraine to implement a moratorium on attacks targeting commercial ships in the Black Sea. Speaking in an interview with the official Turkish news agency Anadolu, Fidan said Turkey requested a mechanism to declare the moratorium following a surge in maritime strikes.
Fidan said the conflict had expanded across the entire Black Sea. He noted that while attacks initially targeted ports and warships, strikes were now hitting all commercial vessels indiscriminately, including ships owned by Turks or flying the Turkish flag.
Security concerns and recent strikes
Fidan stated that Turkey had conveyed its concerns regarding the ship attacks to both countries. He added that Ankara was implementing its own security measures, though he did not provide specific details.
Turkey maintains close relations with both Moscow and Kyiv. On Tuesday, Ankara denounced drone attacks that occurred the previous day against two Turkish-owned vessels in the Black Sea, which left crew members injured.
