Festive lights are being dimmed this Christmas – but not in Holt. The pretty town of North Norfolk is full of relief which can be seen as a response to the cost of living.
The Feathers – part of the East Anglia Chestnut Group – is a Grade II listed Georgian Inn in High Street with 17 rooms, all of which we were told on reception have been refurbished.
Ours is number seven and she is small. We’re surprised it’s being sold as a double. The shower is so small that I have to open the door to turn around without banging on the sides.
A window faces a wall and there is a constant noise from a kitchen extractor fan.
The inspector checks into The Feathers, a Grade II listed Georgian inn on the High Street in the pretty town of Holt, North Norfolk.

Open one of the faucets and it turns at right angles; The paint on the bathroom door is peeling and the bedroom curtains look like they belong in a college dorm.
The bar is at the back of the building near the open kitchen. There is a nicer seat on either side of the front door, where we find a corner table, but just as we sit down, a member of staff approaches us.
“Your table is here, my dear,” she said, pointing to a table almost opposite the front door.
The friendly ‘my dear’ theme runs through the evening, as in ‘…and what can we get you to drink dear’ and ‘are your mains ok dear?’.
My venison goulash and my wife’s sirloin steak are good – but the cold draft when the door opens is an unwanted distraction.
Not as unwelcome as breakfast in the bar, where, when asked for a double espresso, I heard the fateful phrase: “We only make coffee makers for breakfast.”

It’s an extensive buffet with such a terrible toaster that it requires you to sift the bread at least twice before it browns.
The fried eggs floating in oil are reminiscent of a factory canteen from the 70s and the whole room lacks good ventilation.
We come away with the feeling that much of The Feathers has been tweaked – but it’s not a bad price if you can avoid room seven.
