The wellness center — the latest addition to Hotel Hubertus in the Dolomites of South Tyrol, Italy — is something of an architectural masterpiece, composed of a series of “huts” that seem to defy the laws of physics.

Some of them are placed at the bottom of the structure, giving the impression that it is dramatically anchored upside down. And the entire two-story ‘Heaven and Hell’ spa is surprisingly cantilevered to appear as if it is ‘floating between heaven and earth’. In fact, however, it is supported 15 meters above the ground by pillars clad in larch wood.

The wellness center is something of an architectural masterpiece, consisting of a series of “huts” that seem to defy gravity.

In a nod to the quirky design, the hotel says the spa “literally turns wellness on its head,” while the designers say “gravity seems to disappear to make way for unexpected scenarios.”

To access the spa, you cross a suspended walkway from the hotel that takes you to the spa’s top floor – also known as “Heaven” – where you’ll find two hot tubs, showers and a dressing room, all surrounded through glass windows are those that offer a “beautiful” view of the valley and mountains.

Descend to the lower level – “Hell” – and you must remove your bathing suit and robe – this is a naked area. The hotel reveals that “it’s getting really hot in here”. Pampering amenities at “Hell” include two saunas, a third hot tub, an ice room and more “heavenly” views of the peaks.

The color palette and materials of the design should also harmonize with the mountain landscape – the steel structure is clad with brown-tinted aluminum panels and the floor consists of beige ceramic and oiled white oak.

The spa, which can accommodate 27 guests, is the work of Italian architecture firm Noa, which has dubbed the project Hub of Huts.

Noa created a spectacular “Sky Pool” cantilever pool for the hotel in 2016. With this design, the studio wanted the pool to blend into the mountain landscape, “reflecting the clouds and framing the panoramic views.”

Noa founder Lukas Rungger says about the Hub of Huts concept: “The essence of this project is the tilting of horizons, which amazes the viewer.

It’s not the only spa at the hotel – the Alpenreych Park wellness center is filled with seven saunas, six heated pools, relaxation areas and a variety of beauty treatment rooms.

In addition to the excellent wellness facilities, the family hotel, which has been run by the Gasser family since the 1970s, has 64 rooms and suites.

The luxury retreat is just outside the municipality of Olang, conveniently located in the popular Kronplatz ski area – depending on the season, guests can go hiking, mountain climbing, cycling, skiing and sledding, snowshoeing and snowmobile tours.
