Etiquette expert William Hanson has revealed whether you should arrive early, on time or “fashionably late” to a dinner party.
And that’s bad news for early risers.
William shares his advice in his new book, Help I Sexted My Boss – A Hilarious Guide To Avoiding Life’s Awkward Moments, co-written by Jordan North.
In the conversation segment, the couple answer the question “When should I come to dinner?”, with Jordan admitting that the issue causes him a lot of stress.

He writes: “When someone says: “Come at 7:00 p.m.,” what does that really mean? Are you on time? Or do you show your face in a fashionable way?’
William replied: “When I say come at 7pm, I don’t mean I have to be there at 7pm. I expect you to arrive at 19:10, maybe 19:15. But not later.’
However, Jordan complains that this is “weird label gaslighting.”

“Just tell me when to be there and I’ll be there,” he says. “I agree that you should never come early because it’s just annoying and people get confused when they’re getting ready.” But if you need to be there at 19:00, the host must be ready by 19:00.
William responds by explaining that “the ten minute late rule was something that older generations lived by,” acknowledging that these days “people’s time is so precious that it’s changing.”
He adds: “Although I may not like it, I think Jordan is probably right about it. I also agree that guests should never arrive too early. I’d rather you be an hour late than five minutes early.”
William also reveals the true meaning of “7 to 7:30,” explaining that it means “anytime from 7, but not after 7:30 … because that’s when we start eating.”
The optimal time is 7:15 a.m., he suggests.
