In Japan, many people are overworked or have trouble socializing.
According to a government survey, there is even a loneliness epidemic there, with 1.5 million people considered social loners.
As a result, websites that offer a solution for people struggling to form intimate relationships are becoming more and more popular: fake boyfriends for hire.
A website that offers girlfriends for rent is tokyo.rent-kano.net.
Nagi is said to be available for hire from 12,000 yen (£64/$80) for two hours. She says in her bio that on her days off she “bakes bread and sweets and watches anime” and that she is “quiet”.

YouTuber Harry Jaggard tried the service and paid $400 (£321) for “rent and activities” with “Eri”, who explains in her bio that she is “shallow” and that “most of her conversations end in laughter.”
She adds that she enjoys cafe tours, shopping and drinking alcohol.
Jaggard said after the date, “It was the most ridiculous and expensive date I’ve ever been on, but we had fun and it’s still cheaper than having a real girlfriend.”
Women looking for a male companion can hire 34-year-old Takahiro Satonaka via Rentalkareshi.com from 7,000 yen (£37/$46) per hour.

The sites make it clear that they sell companionship – and there are strict rules for each date.
For example, contact is not made via private mobile phones, but via the website.
And the dos and don’ts must be observed.
For example, the aforementioned Eri makes it clear in her biography that holding hands, together with swimming, is only “OK” on the second date.
Jaggard got along so well that she agreed to a second date – free of charge.
