A Canadian woman who moved to London has shared some “crazy” disagreements she’s noticed about living in the UK.
TikToker @callmahals’ list ranges from “cool” to embarrassing to downright annoying things she’s noticed in the four years she’s lived in the capital.
Her video has been viewed more than half a million times and downloaded more than 30,000 times since it was published in mid-September.
She started her “home issue” on the differences between North America and the UK, with the lack of power socks in British bathrooms.
“But it makes sense,” she explained, “because the UK has twice the voltage of North American outlets.”

While this may be annoying to many, Mahal didn’t seem too bothered by the surprise.
One of the more “out of place” elements of British life that the TikToker noticed was washing facilities, which were often found in the kitchen.
“The washing machine is always near the sink,” she noted, but she also noted that “dryers are nothing, and even if they are, most houses don’t have them.”
Mahal turned to a drying rack in her sunlit garden and then to a clothesline near the door.
“Everybody buys these drying racks to hang clothes on, and I think it’s old-fashioned.”
Many comments disagreed with this point, with one saying, “Do we even have dryers?” “You just need a big enough house or a house with a laundry room.”
Another noted that hating dryers is a great way to save money, especially in the summer.
Mahal’s fourth difference was that sockets in the UK have on-off switches, unlike the US and Canada – as well as many other countries – where they do not.
It was clearly the expat’s favorite surprise at her London home as she admitted she thought it was “kind of cool”.
She briefly pointed out that windows in the UK rarely have wire screens to keep out flying insects, before moving on to her actual complaint about the final video.
“The last thing, and what drives me crazy in the summer,” Mahal said, “is the fact that there is no air conditioning.” [air conditioning].’
Even more than the drier comment, this last comment seemed to resonate with many viewers.
One provided a solution: “AC? Open the window.’
Another asked: “No air conditioning? How hot does it get in the UK exactly? “I thought it would be cold and rainy all year.”
And someone else pointedly said, “We don’t need air conditioning because it never gets hot,” followed by a crying emoji.
Mahal acknowledged that the lack of air conditioning “makes sense” given the generally cool weather.
