A paddleboarder in California captured the beautiful moment on video when two whales breached right next to him.
Bill Clements was paddling in the Pismo Beach area on California’s central coast early on September 16 when he witnessed the incredible creatures’ appearance.
He had seen small fish jumping out of the water all morning, but no signs of mammals or other wildlife.
But as he approached the bird activity, Clements saw dozens of pelicans diving headfirst into the water while other seabirds circled for scraps of food.

Soon after, there was a commotion in the water and just a few meters away, two humpback whales became visible with their mouths wide open.
With the GoPro camera rolling, viewers in the footage can hear the paddleboarder screaming with excitement and joy after the whales jumped out and back into the water.
Scientists have long assumed that humpback whales like to break through their fins and tail fins and hit the surface to communicate.
It is believed that slapping creates sounds to send messages to other whales, and that the large splashes serve to send messages over long distances.
Other reasons why whales emerge from the water include claiming territory and eliminating parasites.

The beach’s website says April to November is the best time of year to see humpback whales on their migration. You can see blue whales migrating south from December to February and north from March to May.
At Pismo Beach you can see minke, dolphins and porpoises all year round.

Scientists recommend slowing down and avoiding sudden changes in speed or direction near the whales, not circling their path or crossing their path, and limiting the time you spend observing the whales.
