The end of carry-on chaos? The industry-leading, large overhead bins are becoming more and more popular – and Lufthansa will install them by 2025

The chaos of passengers having to stow their bags in aircraft hold spaces will increasingly become a thing of the past.

This is because new types of oversized luggage containers have been introduced to the market and more will be installed in the near future.

The new Airspace L Bin from Airbus will be installed on 38 A320s of the German airline Lufthansa in January 2025.

They offer 60 percent more bag capacity than the previous generation A320 containers, allowing three additional bags per container and space for bags measuring 61cm (height) x 38cm (width) x 25cm (depth).

For reference: Ryanair’s carry-on baggage allowance is 55cm (height) x 40cm (width) x 20cm (depth).

Airbus said: “L-Bins are designed to be installed in three to five days. It is Airbus’ fastest and most cost-effective solution for the A320.

“This leads to fewer flight cancellations for the airline.” Second, L-bins provide room for three additional bags per bin, creating a better experience for customers and crew when boarding and disembarking the aircraft.”

The carrier added: “The tubs, made of ultra-light and highly stable composite products, are manufactured by EFW (Elbe Flugzeugwerke GmbH).”

“As with all Airbus modifications, reusing the same components to minimize waste is an important consideration. The L container reuses many parts of the original container, including the side wall, ceiling and lighting.

American Airlines, meanwhile, was the launch customer for the Airbus Airspace XL luggage container, which can accommodate bags up to 24 inches high x 16 inches wide x 10 inches deep.

American introduced the Airspace XL on its Airbus A321 neo.

Charbel Youzkatli, Head of Commercial Services Europe at Airbus, said: “From discussions with airline customers, we know that larger containers are clearly needed to improve the passenger experience.” Like the XL containers, the L containers offer more space and the benefit of a plug-and-play retrofit.

“We are pleased that Lufthansa is the first company to offer its passengers L-Bins and benefit from the associated efficiency benefits in aircraft handling.”
