Americans speak English, but Brits can sometimes appear to be speaking a foreign language and vice versa.
To highlight this, American influencer Ella Rose McFadin and her English partner James made a fascinating TikTok video demonstrating the different words they use to describe the same thing.
Ella (25) is from Newport Beach, California, while James (31) is originally from Chiswick, West London. The couple, who have been together for two years, live together in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Her video struck a chord with Ella’s 121,000 TikTok followers and went viral, garnering over a million views and nearly 90,000 likes.
In the clip she says: “Since James and I started dating, I’ve been staying together [note] on my phone about the things we as American and English boys say differently.’

The couple, who met in New York through a dating app, then break down the words and phrases they say differently – for example, while Ella says the “body” of a car, James says the “trumpet” of ‘ a car
When Ella says the word “curb,” James responds with the word “curb,” prompting Ella to respond, “That’s so weird!”
Car park versus car park, petrol versus petrol and vacuum cleaner versus vacuum cleaner are other examples cited by the pair – although James notes that Brits also use the word ‘vacuum cleaner’.
Ella tells James elsewhere in the video, “I’d say ‘I’m going to take a shower’, you’d say ‘I’m going to take a shower’.”
Taking to the comments section, TikTok user Ashleigh wrote: “As a Brit in America this is my life.”
And user Lia Sioumkas said: “My boyfriend is also from England and I’m Canadian. Every day we discover things that we say differently, but I’ve also adapted to his way of speaking.”

Speaking to MailOnline Travel, Ella shared a few more phrases that differ between the two – she says sunscreen while James says sunscreen, she says ‘accidentally’ when he says ‘accidentally’ and she says throw when he says cast says.
The content creator, who has 190,000 Instagram followers, also shared her thoughts on the UK when she travels there with James several times a year.
She says: “I loved Britain. London and New York are similar to me in many ways, but the free health care and school system seems much better there. I want to raise my children there so they have those nice little touches.”
Ella notes that James, who works in the food and beverage industry, moved to the US for the job opportunities and “likes the weather.” [there] compared to the UK”.
She adds: “But it’s much more expensive here for basic necessities (like toilet paper and juice).”
