The Inspector is delighted with the ‘warm and cosy’ Sheffield Hotel which once housed the artist Picasso

Sheffield is enjoying himself.

The award-winning musical Standing At The Sky’s Edge is based on Park Hill, the brutalist block of flats built in the late 1950s, and has moved from the city’s Crucible to London’s National Theatre.

“This is the talk of the day,” says the man who greets me at Brocco On The Park.

But that’s not the same as saying that everyone loves the monumental building that overlooks the city center. “I can’t stand it,” says one employee.

It’s a damp Wednesday night, but everything about this eight-bedroom hotel next to Endcliffe Park is warm and cozy.

“Did you know that Picasso stayed here in 1950 when he visited Sheffield for the International Peace Conference?” another employee said. Not me.

It must have looked very different back then. Today, all rooms are named after birds. Mine is called Owl Den. It’s small and nothing hangs on the white walls, but somehow it has character.

Two slices of homemade coffee and walnut cake waiting to be eaten on the table; bedside lamps hang from the ceiling; The neutral color palette is calming and the cleverly designed bathroom has a freestanding bath and walk-in shower.

The ground floor is used almost entirely by the indoor-outdoor restaurant, where sharing plates are served under the gardener, fisher and hunter sections.

Upstairs is the inspector’s room. “It’s small and nothing hangs on the white walls, but it has character in a way,” he says

I’m alone and glad I don’t have to share any of my spectacular choices, especially the king prawn taco with kimchi, roasted cashews and cilantro.

Back in the room I read that every evening from 17:30 to 18:30 there is a “hygge hour” where everyone is offered a free glass of prosecco.

This is such a place.
