World War II was the conflict that shaped the modern world, and on this five-day guided tour you’ll visit some of the great German cities and sites that formed its heart and Hitler’s Nazi state, from Berlin and Dresden to the infamous Colditz Castle.
Begin your tour at Stalag Luft III, a Luftwaffe-run POW camp in Zagan, Poland, where Allied air force personnel were held. It was immortalized by the epic 1963 film The Great Escape starring Steve McQueen. Historian and TV presenter Guy Walters tells the story behind the film, takes you through the camp and reveals people’s escape routes.
You’ll also spend a day at Colditz Castle, the imposing Renaissance fortress that was converted into a high-security prison during World War II. The castle is a striking example of the plight and bravery of the prisoners of war, known for their heroic escape plans.

Explore Colditz Castle: Construction of the castle began around 1158 and served as a watchtower over the Zwickauer Mulde in Saxony. Because of its location, after the outbreak of war, the castle was quickly converted into a high-security prison camp for dangerous or fugitive officers.
During a fascinating tour, you will see war tunnels, a homemade radio, fake uniforms and other ingenious escape devices.
Discover the city of Dresden: In February 1945, RAF and US Air Force bombers dropped nearly 3,000 tons of explosives and incendiary bombs on Dresden.
The 12th-century city (covering an area of more than 1,600 hectares) was largely destroyed by the three-day bombardment, but has recovered today. You will visit the Military History Museum and the Frauenkirche – a beautiful Lutheran church that was completely rebuilt in 2005.
