Oscars 2023 win in viewers to the last chapter of ‘The Last of Us’

Monday morning was a date to mark on the calendar. The last chapter of the successful ‘The Last of Us’ and the 95th edition of the Oscars coincided in date and timeforcing viewers to choose between the Jimmy Kimmel-orchestrated gala or the end of the first part of Ellie and Joel’s journey.

Variety echoes the audience data of that evening, where the two productions achieved success despite the aforementioned confluence. However, there was one clear winner: the Oscars. The Hollywood Academy Awards ceremony drew 18.7 million viewers, ten million more than the final chapter of “The Last of Us,” which tuned in with 8.2 million. It should be noted that the Oscars was broadcast on ABC, the general North American channel, and ‘The Last of Us’ was only available on HBO, a paid channel, and later on the streaming platform.

Despite Kimmel’s success for a gala that has done nothing but lose ratings in recent editions, ‘The Last of Us’ beats its own record, repeating last week’s feat and throughout its first season, always adding more audience each installment along the way, which made it the most-watched series in HBO Max history in Europe, including in Spain, and in Latin America according to Variety. The entire season amassed 30.4 million viewers, surpassing the 29 million viewers of the first season of “House of the Dragon”.

“All at once everywhere” and the rest of this season’s productions manage to alleviate the downward trend suffered by the Oscars since 2018. Five years and different formats later, the awards manage to return with an increase of more than three million viewers compared to the 2022 gala, 12% more.

Pascal immediately everywhere

The audience was supposed to be divided, but it didn’t. With his successful character coming to the end of the road, Pedro Pascal didn’t join the 8.2 million fans who tuned in to the last throes of “The Last of Us” and decided to attend the Dolby Theater call. Pascal has arrived at the 95th edition and not only to show off, the actor has delivered two awards: best documentary short and best animated short.
