War correspondent Clive Myrie reviews our travel questions and answers.
He looks back on his travels as a reporter – among other things on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine – and explains why the Caribbean is close to his heart.
FIRST TRIP AS A CORRESPONDENT?
Algeria in 1992 when elections collapsed, triggering a decade of civil war. I had previously covered Northern Ireland for radio news, but Algeria was a completely different situation.

Clive’s first trip as a war reporter was to Algeria in 1992, just before a decade of civil war. Above is the country’s capital, Algiers
WHAT MOMENT DO YOU REMEMBER FROM covering Ukraine?
See the column of burned out Russian military vehicles in Bucha. The bodies of charred Russian soldiers still lay in the tanks.
But it’s always the attacks on the defenseless that stick in my mind the most, those in residential areas where there are no soldiers, no military installations whatsoever.
EARLY HOLIDAY REMINDER?
Jamaica when I was about seven years old, early seventies. It was the first time my parents had stayed there since moving to Bolton. I don’t want it. It was so hot, I missed all my friends, there was no football on TV. I love Jamaica now, but that first trip was not fun at all.
FAVORITE UK CITY?
I live in London and have a great passion for the capital. I spent my first days as a radio reporter in Bristol, an incredibly vibrant, exciting city that always has a story to tell.

A PLACE IN YOUR HEART?
The Caribbean Islands. It’s where my family comes from and it’s a part of the world that I love even though I have so many problems. I also love Italy which I try to visit every year.
ARE YOU A GOOD SLEEPER?
I have the gift of being able to fall asleep absolutely anywhere, so this is a big help on a long trip.
TIPS FOR LIFE ON THE ROAD?
No matter how hot the country you’re traveling to, pack a vest for the flight. I noticed that airplanes regulate the temperature so that it is colder when the food is served and warmer again when the passengers are supposed to sleep.
