Tony Gilroy, creator of the Disney+ series Andor, is preparing to step away from the Star Wars franchise after completing the show's second season. The upcoming season, which previews on Disney+ on April 22, 2025, will mark the end of both the series and Gilroy's involvement with the franchise.
Gilroy entered the Star Wars universe in 2016 when Lucasfilm brought him in to rewrite and supervise filming for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. His work earned him a script credit on the movie, which became one of the most well-accepted films in the franchise. Lucasfilm later hired him as showrunner and chief writer of Andor after Stephen Schiff departed the project.
Under Gilroy's leadership, Andor earned praise from fans and critics for its sophisticated narrative, stratified characters, and rooted depiction of the rebellion. However, Gilroy confirmed to Collider that taking on another Star Wars project is not in his future plans.
Gilroy's comments on leaving the franchise
Reflecting on his time with Star Wars, Gilroy noted how much of his life had been dedicated to the franchise.
"It is not really part of my plan. I have been peripherally involved for 10 years and I have involved intensely for six years, so it is a rather large part of my life. There are other things to do. I think when it is done, I will have left a rather big piece of Star Wars real estate behind. I feel guilty for not having closed."
Return to directing film projects
After spending years on Star Wars, Gilroy is trying to return to the director's chair to make a film music project.
"I would like to direct before forgetting how. So, I have a movie that I am trying to go down. We will see if I receive the money for this. I am again in another world. I went back out with the hat in hand, trying to raise funds."
