Travel agency Thomas Cook has named Tirana, Albania, the most affordable European city break destination, with average daily costs of £51 per person.
New research from the tour operator found that 18 of Europe's 51 popular city-break destinations can be enjoyed for less than £100 per person each day. The findings come as milder autumn temperatures arrive across the continent following a summer of scorching weather.
A three-day long weekend in Tirana costs an average of £153 per person. By contrast, an equivalent three-day trip to Amsterdam in the Netherlands costs roughly £915, or £305 per person each day.
Tirana is the capital and largest city of Albania, located in the central region of the Balkan nation. Situated between the Dajti mountain range and the coastal plains, the city is known for its colourful Ottoman and Italian-influenced architecture.
Despite Albania's fast-growing popularity as a tourist destination, with Thomas Cook recording booking increases of over 300 per cent in recent years, Tirana remains a hidden gem for budget travellers. Paid attractions in the capital cost an average of under £4.
Dining out and accommodation in Tirana are also exceptionally affordable. A plate of tave kosi, Albania's national dish of baked rice and lamb in a tangy yoghurt sauce, costs around £7, while Birra Korça, the country's iconic beer, costs £1.31. Overnight accommodation averages approximately £27.50 per person for stays in early September.
Budget Destinations in Romania and Turkey
Bucharest, the capital of Romania, took second place in the rankings with an average daily cost of £57 per person. Like Tirana, the Romanian capital is currently experiencing a tourism boom.
Nicknamed "Little Paris" because of the heavy French influence on its architecture, Bucharest features landmarks such as the Romanian Athenaeum and the Central Library. Tourists can travel across the city using a £1.32 daily bus pass, while dining out averages around £10 for dinner and under £6 for a quick mid-sightseeing lunch.
Situated in southern Romania on the banks of the Dâmbovița River, Bucharest serves as the nation's primary cultural and economic centre, renowned for its wide, tree-lined boulevards and historic monuments.
Antalya, a coastal city in Turkey, ranked as the third most affordable autumn destination at £67 per person per day. The Turkish resort city recorded the lowest dining costs in the entire study, with both fast-food lunches and restaurant dinners available for around £7.
Although paid attractions in Antalya average £16.45, visitors can explore historic sites such as the Old Town, Hadrian's Gate, and the historic harbor area of Kaleiçi free of charge.
Located on the southwest coast of Turkey, Antalya is a major Mediterranean hub known for its turquoise waters and ancient ruins dating back to Roman and Greek times.

Warsaw, Poland, ranked fourth in the survey with an average daily cost of £68 per person, followed by Istanbul, Turkey, in fifth place at £71 per day.

Reflecting on the research findings, Nicholas Smith, dynamic packages director at Thomas Cook, noted that British travelers can find strong value beyond traditional Western European destinations.
"Our research shows British holidaymakers can find great value when planning a European city break and there are amazing experiences to discover beyond the likes of Paris, London and Rome," Smith said.
"Eastern European and Turkish city destinations consistently deliver affordability and with growing tourism numbers, they won't remain a secret for long."
