A flight captain departing from the Greek island of Skiathos to Naples forced over 180 passengers to choose between leaving their luggage behind or disembarking after declaring the aircraft was too heavy to take off. The incident occurred shortly before departure as the flight crew conducted pre-flight weight assessments.
Surprised travelers protested loudly when told that not all baggage could be accommodated on the flight. Explanations from the crew that suitcases would be delivered on a later flight failed to resolve the discontent, according to reporting by Polish news outlet TVP Info and Italian media outlets.
Addressing the passengers directly, the pilot stated that he was the captain and that the decision rested with him for safety reasons. He explained that the aircraft needed to be lighter to achieve a safe takeoff. An audio recording published by media captured the captain reminding passengers that he was responsible for everyone's safety and warning that the plane would remain grounded unless its total weight was reduced.
During the discussion, the pilot presented the passengers with a direct choice, asking whether they preferred for passengers or baggage to leave the aircraft. Crew members had initially considered limiting the number of passengers on board. However, all travelers ultimately remained on the flight after agreeing to leave a portion of their luggage behind. None of the passengers opted to disembark, and the pilot's firm stance was eventually met with applause from the cabin.
Short runway requires weight reduction
Italian publication Napoli Today reported that the runway at Skiathos Alexandros Papadiamantis Airport is shorter than those found at major international hubs. Skiathos, located in the Aegean Sea, is widely known in aviation for its restricted runway length, which requires precise operational calculations before every departure.
Before any aircraft takes off, flight crews must calculate performance standards based on factors including total mass, air temperature, runway length, surface condition, and wind speed and direction. When safety margins are insufficient, reducing total aircraft weight is a standard procedure to ensure a safe departure.
Further flight disruptions reported
The incident comes amid wider reports of passenger disruptions across international air travel. In South Korea, pastors were recently fined after delivering a loud sermon inside an aircraft cabin during a flight. The individuals stood in the aisle and argued with passengers who protested the disturbance.
Meanwhile, European travelers face potential delays due to planned labor action in Spain. Airport strikes scheduled throughout August and September are expected to impact approximately 11,600 flights and affect nearly two million passengers across Spanish airports.
