Mayors in three Alpine villages in the Maurienne valley of Savoie have banned residents from drinking tap water after health tests detected elevated levels of chemical uranium.

The municipal decrees affect around 1,760 residents across the communes of La Chambre, Les Chavannes, and La Chapelle in southeastern France. Local officials issued the prohibitions after water samples showed chemical uranium concentrations exceeding official safety alert thresholds.

Savoie is a mountainous department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, where natural mineral deposits are common throughout the granite bedrock of the French Alps. The Regional Health Agency oversees public health and water quality monitoring across the region.

Water restrictions and village status

In Les Chavannes-en-Maurienne, a village of 200 residents, the municipal council published its decree on Friday, August 21. Officials warned that repeated and prolonged consumption of the water could present health risks, particularly for infants, pregnant women, and people with kidney conditions.

The municipal decree prohibits the use of tap water for drinking, food preparation, and cooking. However, residents may continue using tap water without restriction for all other domestic purposes, including showering, bathing, washing dishes, and doing laundry.

The drinking ban has already been resolved in La Chambre, the largest affected commune with 1,200 residents. Local media outlet Ici Pays de Savoie reported that the village operates two separate water distribution networks. Municipal engineers restored safe drinking water by disconnecting the specific network that showed high uranium levels. Restrictions remain active in La Chapelle, which has 360 residents.

Naturally occurring uranium and EU testing rules

Health authorities emphasized that the excess uranium does not stem from an industrial spill or sudden contamination. The Regional Health Agency of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes told local media that uranium occurs naturally in the subterranean rock of the Maurienne valley.

The agency explained that the restrictions follow the entry into force of new European Union regulations designed to strengthen water safety controls. Chemical uranium testing was recently added to routine sanitary monitoring, prompting authorities to take mandatory action once alert thresholds were exceeded.

Uranium is a heavy metallic element found naturally in rock and soil. While public concern often focuses on radioactivity, health standards for drinking water are based on chemical toxicity, which primarily affects kidney function when ingested in high concentrations over long periods.

Health thresholds and toxicological standards

Current drinking water standards rely on scientific studies of animal ingestion. Laboratory research in rats identified a minimum harmful dose of 60 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day for kidney lesions.

Extrapolating those animal findings to humans, the World Health Organization established a toxicological reference value for chemical uranium in 2005. The international body set a drinking water alert threshold of 15 micrograms per litre based on chemical toxicity risks. European regulations established a minimum action threshold of 30 micrograms per litre.

Medical risks and scientific findings

The European Food Safety Authority indicated that the most significant risk from ingesting high doses of chemical uranium involves damage to the kidneys and the digestive tract. The European agency provides independent scientific advice on environmental and food hazards.

Studies in animals also showed impacts on reproduction and development, including changes in vitamin D metabolism. Higher doses in animal testing affected fertility and the central nervous system, primarily causing cognitive changes.

However, health officials noted that those neurological and reproductive effects occurred only at doses higher than those causing kidney damage. The European agency added that no carcinogenicity studies involving rodents ingesting soluble or insoluble uranium have been conducted to date.

Long term treatment plans and public meetings

Local authorities are studying long-term engineering solutions to reduce chemical uranium levels in municipal supplies for the three communes. Proposed measures include installing specialized water filtration systems or constructing a dedicated decontamination unit.

According to Ici Pays de Savoie, public meetings will take place in the coming weeks to inform local residents about the water treatment plans and next steps.
