Country music icon Dolly Parton has revealed that her recent health issues were caused by neglecting her own medical needs while caring for her late husband, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025 at the age of 82.
The 80-year-old singer opened up about her recent struggles during an interview with People magazine published on Friday, following months of fan concern triggered by canceled performances and a postponed Las Vegas residency.
Neglecting Personal Health During Husband's Illness
"I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn't pay attention to when I was watching over Carl," Parton told the publication, admitting she had recently experienced hard times with her health.
The Jolene singer noted that health challenges were not entirely new to her, referencing a period during the 1980s when she was down for several months with female issues.
Parton explained that modern social media amplifies public concern over her well-being compared to earlier decades. "Everything gets magnified in ways it wasn't years ago," she said.
"I used to joke that I was the Queen of the Tabloids, but now I guess I can say I'm the Queen of Social Media AI! Seriously, though, even though I'm still healin,' I'm still workin'."
Representatives for Parton did not immediately respond to a request for comment from the Daily Mail.
Last-Minute Cancellation at Dollywood Theme Park
Fan worry escalated earlier this month after Parton made a last-minute decision to cancel a scheduled in-person appearance at her Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
The theme park, which opened in 1986 in the Smoky Mountains and sits a little over three hours from Nashville, was celebrating the grand opening of a new rollercoaster called NightFlight Expedition.
Instead of attending in person, Parton delivered a recorded video message displayed on a large screen to visitors. She was wearing a pink dress accompanied by shimmering fairy wings.
"I'm still in Nashville, and I'm sorry about that," Parton told fans in the video clip, which was reported by the Knoxville News Sentinel. "I'm supposed to be there in person, like we planned. Now I've told you before, all my fans, that I have had a few little health issues."
She explained that she experiences occasional dizziness and dehydration, which prompted her doctor to advise against travel. "And I'm dehydrated. And so my personal doctor has kind of clipped my wings saying, 'You ain't traveling this week.' So I guess if your doctor tells you you ain't traveling this week, you ain't traveling this week."
Towards the end of the video message, the singer reassured her audience that she intends to keep supporters informed, saying she likes to keep fans "in the loop, like I said I would, on everything."
Postponed Las Vegas Residency and Medical Recovery
The theme park absence followed a major announcement back in May, when Parton canceled her six-date Las Vegas residency titled Dolly: Live at Caesars Palace's Colosseum.
The concert series at the famous Nevada resort venue had been scheduled for September 2026. Parton had originally planned to launch the residency in December 2025 before previously announcing a postponement to September 2026 due to undisclosed health challenges.
Following the May cancellation, Parton shared a detailed social media update regarding her condition, revealing that she has long suffered from kidney stones.
She explained that her immune system and digestive system had gotten all out of whack over the past three years and required time to be rebuilt and strengthened.
"The good news is I'm responding really well to meds and treatments and I'm improving every day," Parton told her followers. "Now, the bad news is, it's gonna take me a little while before I'm up to stage performance level because some of the meds and treatments make me a little bit 'swimmy headed' as my grandma used to say."
The entertainer added that balance was essential for her energetic stage shows. "And of course, I can't be dizzy carrying around banjos, guitars and such on five-inch heels. And you know that I'm going to be wearing them!"
Parton acknowledged that she had some healing to do, but expressed full confidence in her medical team, noting that her doctors assured her everything she has is treatable.
Grief, Family Loss, and Returning to the Spotlight
Despite her health hurdles, Parton made her first public appearance following the Las Vegas cancellation in June, attending the opening of Dolly's Tennessean Travel Stop in Cornersville, Tennessee.
Earlier in the year, she attended Dollywood's 41st season opening day celebration in March. Those appearances came after earlier concerns when she missed her 80th birthday concert at the Grand Ole Opry in January and offered only a virtual message for the 2026 BRIT Awards.
Speaking to the crowd at the travel stop opening, per WLOS News 13, Parton said: "I've been up to a lot. I've not been touring, as you know. I've had a few little health issues, and we're taking good care of them."
Parton spoke candidly about the emotional toll of losing her husband of nearly 60 years. "I just kind of got worn down and worn out, grieving over Carl and a lot of other little things going on," she said. "I just got myself kind of where I needed to build myself back up spiritually, emotionally, and physically. But, all is good. It didn't slow me down."
While her absence from her 80th birthday tribute concert at the Grand Ole Opry sparked initial health concerns, a source told the Daily Mail that her non-attendance was not related to medical issues.
The country star has also faced recent family grief. Her brother Coy "Denver" Parton passed away at the age of 82 on July 23, just weeks before her Dollywood event cancellation.
New Museum Launch at Nashville Hotel
Alongside updates on her health, Parton highlighted her latest business venture during her interview with People: a new museum titled Life Of Many Colors, housed inside her SongTeller Hotel in Nashville.
According to the official website, the attraction is the largest exhibit celebrating her life anywhere in the world, spanning every dynamic decade from the top of the mountains to the top of the world.
The website states that her transformative career takes guests on the road, behind the scenes, on set and backstage of her most iconic moments. Tickets for the Life Of Many Colors museum go on sale starting September 29.
