Actress Sandra Bullock is facing explosive claims from insiders that she acted as a controlling partner who cut off her late boyfriend, photographer Bryan Randall, from his family and lifelong friends before his death in August 2023.

For an actress who disappeared from sight for years, it's quite a shock to now find Sandra Bullock suddenly everywhere

The allegations emerge as Bullock, 62, returns to the public eye alongside co-star Nicole Kidman to promote Practical Magic 2, her first film project in four years following her retreat from Hollywood to care for Randall during his three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Bullock's beloved romantic partner, Bryan Randall, died aged 57 in August 2023, of the degenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)

Speaking this week on the SmartLess podcast hosted by Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes, Bullock revealed she began grieving long before Randall died at age 57. She described the former model as "the love of my life" but insisted she was not allowed to speak publicly about his ALS diagnosis because he specifically requested secrecy. "That was the request, and I honored it," Bullock said. "He asked me not to share... and it isolated me in the process." She added that after completing her 2022 adventure comedy The Lost City, she decided to step away from acting, recalling, "I thought I was going to have a little bit of a mental issue."

Bullock and co-star Nicole Kidman have been out and about to promote Practical Magic 2, the long-awaited sequel to their 1998 romantic fantasy movie

However, sources close to Randall tell a very different story, alleging that the Oscar-winning star was responsible for shutting down his social circle and cutting off contact with his family during their eight years together and following his death.

The established narrative has been that Bullock gave up on stardom to concentrate on family

Allegations of Isolation and Broken Ties

According to an insider, Bullock has not been in touch with Randall's daughter, Skylar, since his death, despite having raised her together alongside Bullock's adopted daughter, Laila, whom the actress adopted in 2015.

Bullock said she started grieving for Randall, a professional photographer and former model she described as 'the love of my life,' long before he died

Speaking of the star distancing herself from Randall's family, a source said: "His mom, Evie, has taken it really hard. She's such a person of faith though that she just leans on her faith for that pain. His daughter, Skylar, she's doing great. She's obviously very sad about her dad, but she is doing really great."

The Daily Mail has learned that Randall's family and close friends felt frozen out by a 'controlling' star who cut him off from the life he had before they met

A Randall insider told the Daily Mail that the photographer was forced to drop almost everyone from his past once his romance with the actress began. "Once he started dating her, he had to drop speaking to basically everyone in his life except for his immediate family," the source said, explaining that it "created so much chaos." The source added that the transformation "started so subtly, and then all of a sudden, you start to realize that he's never coming back home again, he's never calling again." Friends in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, reported that he rarely visited and stopped responding to text messages.

After meeting Bullock, he rarely visited his family and friends back in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, the Daily Mail was told

One notable exception occurred in December 2016 when Randall's father, Gary, died. Bullock accompanied Randall to the funeral in Portland, where an eyewitness noted she was "lovely and kind at the funeral," calling her "approachable, cordial" and noting she "did not make a scene over her being there."

Relationship History and Past Marriage

The couple met in 2015 when Randall was hired to photograph the birthday party of Bullock's adopted son, Louis. They made their first public appearance together in October 2015 at the premiere of her film Our Brand is Crisis. Over their eight-year relationship, the pair repeatedly denied rumors of engagement or marriage.

Bullock's marriage to Jesse James ended acrimoniously after just five years amid allegations from several women that they'd had an affair with James

Addressing her views on matrimony in 2021, Bullock, whose past relationships included actors Matthew McConaughey and Ryan Gosling, stated: "I don't need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother." Instead, in 2017, the couple exchanged non-binding vows on the beach at Three Bees, a luxury resort on Harbour Island in the Bahamas that had become a special sanctuary for them.

Randall started out as a model in New York in the early 1980s

Insiders indicated that Bullock's reluctance to marry stemmed from her difficult marriage to motorbike builder and Monster Garage host Jesse James. The pair married in 2005 and fought a custody battle over James's daughter with his ex-porn star second wife. Their five-year union collapsed acrimoniously in 2010 amid allegations from multiple women of extramarital affairs by James.

James publicly admitted that "there is only one person to blame for this whole situation and that is me," asking Bullock and their children to "find it in their hearts to forgive me" for their "pain and embarrassment." Although James checked into rehab to address personal issues and save the marriage, Bullock filed for divorce a month later. The public fallout was particularly painful for Bullock, who had long held an image as "America's sweetheart."

An insider said that Bullock hasn't been in touch with Randall's daughter, Skylar, since his death even though they raised her together

Troubled Past and Image Management

Friends described the pre-Bullock Randall as a gregarious, charismatic man who loved motorbikes and fishing, but acknowledged he struggled significantly with alcohol and drug addiction. When his then-fiancée Janine Staten was pregnant with Skylar in the early 1990s, Randall was in rehab, and court records showed he was once ordered to pay nearly $2,000 in backdated child support. After Staten, a heroin addict, died of an overdose, relatives said Randall stepped up to take full guardianship of Skylar, then 14. He achieved sobriety after half a dozen rehab stints, taking up photography to keep his mind busy.

Stylist Wayne Scot Lukas said he'd heard that Bullock was 'very particular and semi-controlling when it comes to her image' and protecting her privacy

Celebrity fashion stylist Wayne Scot Lukas, who knew Randall when he began modeling in New York in the early 1980s, recalled booking him when he was "half in and half out" of addiction. Lukas described Randall as a "huge catch" with a "heart of gold," adding: "I don't know if he could handle the Hollywood life that she had, and I think that it was good that he was hidden away, but I don't know if that was as good for his psyche because he had so much to offer."

Lukas said he had heard Bullock was "very particular and semi-controlling when it comes to her image" and privacy, observing that Randall was "hidden away, locked in at Rapunzel's castle." Lukas added: "God bless her for taking care of him. I'm sure before he had the ALS, she had a great time with him. As long as he was sober, he was a light."

An insider claimed Bullock was particularly cautious about Randall's female friends to prevent tabloid speculation. "She didn't want her image tarnished," the source said, adding that Bullock took steps to prevent photos that could be misconstrued as cheating. Mia St John, founder of the Mia St John Foundation and mother of Randall's ex-girlfriend Paris, confirmed she lost touch with Randall, answering "Yeah, for sure" when asked if she believed Bullock wanted to distance him from other women.

Secrecy During Illness and Final Farewell

When Randall was diagnosed with ALS in 2020, secrecy around his life intensified. Friends and distant relatives were unaware of his diagnosis, only learning of his illness from news reports following his death. His absence became noticeable in 2020 when he did not accompany Bullock to Vancouver for filming on The Unforgivable, and again in summer 2021 during production of The Lost City in the Dominican Republic.

At her Beverly Hills mansion, Bullock maintained strict Covid testing protocols, keeping Randall in the back of the property where only medical personnel were regular visitors. Annual Easter parties at her home and holiday gatherings in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, were halted, with Bullock seeing friends primarily at their residences or outside by her pool.

Although Bullock provided devoted medical care, the illness created strain. One source noted Randall lived for a period at one of her Malibu properties near the ocean, leading to false assumptions that they had separated. His mother, Evie, and daughter, Skylar, visited during his final months, but others in his circle were kept uninformed.

Lukas expressed shock at the secrecy surrounding Randall's death, recalling: "Zero idea. Zero. That's how private it was. Nobody knew, just so you know... There were no funerals. There were no calls. He was alive and then he was dead... Almost like he disappeared."

The Daily Mail reached out to Bullock's representative for comment. An insider confirmed the circumstances around his death were "very controlled," stating: "He had such a vibrant life before Sandra... to just quietly whisper that he passed and nobody really knew anything. Nobody got to say goodbye. It was all just very controlled and quiet. And it was strange and sad. It was like he got boiled down to just being her boyfriend."

On December 30, 2023, what would have been Randall's birthday, Bullock scattered his ashes in the Snake River in Wyoming. Her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, described the event as "a quiet gesture, far from everything. Far from flashes, cameras and noise."
