Actress Nicole Kidman has joined TikTok and published her first video showing a behind-the-scenes look at the London premiere of her upcoming sequel film Practical Magic 2.
The 59-year-old Academy Award-winning actress posted a sultry video clip showing her getting glammed up before stepping onto the blue carpet at the Leicester Square Odeon cinema in London on Thursday night. Kidman sashayed throughout the video in a custom silver gown created by French luxury fashion house Chanel.
Kidman captioned the debut video to her new followers on the social media platform: "Magic brought me here ✨ #PracticalMagic2 @practicalmagicmovie". TikTok, operated by parent company ByteDance, is a global short-form video application popular for behind-the-scenes celebrity content and movie promotional campaigns.
Kidman was joined at the star-studded London premiere by her co-star Sandra Bullock, 62. The two leading ladies graced the blue carpet together as the sequel to their 1998 cult fantasy film prepares to hit cinemas.
Bullock opted for a strapless leopard print dress from French couture house Givenchy, pairing the ensemble with black strappy heels as the actresses posed together amid rows of lit candles. The two stars held hands as they walked the carpet.
Premiere Glamour and Sequel Details
Kidman has thrown herself into professional projects this year following the finalisation of her divorce from country musician Keith Urban in January. The project reunites her with Bullock, who recently spoke publicly about the loss of her long-time partner Bryan Randall.
The plot of the sequel is set more than 25 years after the events of the original 1998 movie and is adapted from Alice Hoffman's 2021 sequel novel, The Book of Magic. An official synopsis for the film outlines a story where the magical sisters must reunite across international borders: "The Owens women must once again unite, traveling from their home in Massachusetts to the United Kingdom to confront the source of their magic and save the next generation of their family."
The new film properly introduces the next generation of the family, featuring Bullock's on-screen daughters Kylie and Antonia. Kylie is portrayed by American actress Joey King, while Antonia is played by British actress Maisie Williams, best known for her role in Game of Thrones. Bullock reprises her role as Sally Owens alongside Kidman as her sister Gillian Owens, two sisters raised as witches who are typically at the center of town gossip. The cast also features actors Lee Pace and Solly McLeod.
Surprise Screening at Hollywood Cemetery
Earlier this month, the two leading ladies surprised fans when they showed up to a Cinespia screening of their original 1998 flick at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, California. Cinespia is a landmark Los Angeles organization that presents outdoor movie screenings at historic venues, attracting large crowds of film enthusiasts during the summer months.
A behind-the-scenes video clip shared on Instagram showed the audience erupting with excitement after the women took the stage hand in hand. Speaking to the crowd at the cemetery venue, Bullock remarked: "Practical Magic is the perfect movie to show at a cemetery," according to a report by film trade publication The Hollywood Reporter.
Meanwhile, Kidman thanked the crowd for their ongoing support in "getting this second film made that's coming to you very soon."
Production History and Literary Origins
Kidman first confirmed in 2024 that she and Bullock would reprise their roles as orphaned sisters Gillian and Sally Owens. In the original 1998 film, the sisters were raised by their eccentric aunts, played by Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, who embraced their family's magical history despite local gossip.
The sequel is produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, the major Hollywood studio behind the original release. Both Kidman and Bullock serve as executive producers on the project, with Susanne Bier directing. Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the 1998 original script, returned to write the sequel alongside screenwriters Kelly Marcel and Georgia Pritchett.
The original Practical Magic earned $68.3 million globally upon its release in 1998, according to box office database The Numbers, falling below its $75 million production budget. Despite its initial box office shortfall, the film developed a massive cult classic status among fans over subsequent decades.
Author Alice Hoffman has written three other books expanding the Owens family universe due to popular demand from readers. "I got mail from readers saying that they wanted to have a sequel, that they wanted to know what happened to the characters," the author said in 2021.
"But, I felt like I wanted to know how these characters happened; I wanted to know their history," Hoffman added. "So I went back in time and I went to the '60s in New York City in Greenwich Village, which is my favorite time and I wish we were there right now, and it was a total pleasure."
Practical Magic 2 will hit cinemas nationwide on September 11.
