Russian Baku hotel bookings jump tenfold for Formula 1

Russian tourist bookings for hotel rooms in Baku have jumped tenfold in September compared to the same period last year as travelers flock to the Azerbaijani capital for the Formula 1 Grand Prix and major music concerts.

Data from online booking service Ostrovok revealed that 20 percent of Russian trips to the city in September coincide with the motor race, which takes place from September 24 to September 26.

The Grand Prix will be held on a street circuit passing through the avenues of the Azerbaijani capital. The sports event is accompanied by a major entertainment program featuring concerts by international stars Calvin Harris and Katy Perry during the race weekend, as well as a performance by singer Valery Meladze ahead of the competition.

Irina Kozlova, managing director of Ostrovok, said the scheduling allows tourists to combine several reasons for a trip in a single journey, joining concert and sporting event visits with a vacation on the Caspian coast.

Accommodation costs and visitor demographics

The influx of visitors has impacted accommodation prices in the capital. The average cost of a night in Baku in September is 8,200 rubles, but rates rise to 10,300 rubles per night between September 21 and September 27 during the Grand Prix week.

Adult couples traveling without children form the largest group of Russian tourists heading to Azerbaijan, accounting for 59 percent of all hotel bookings. Solo travelers account for 25 percent of reservations, while families with children and groups of adults without children represent 8 percent each.

Major event destination on the Caspian Sea

Baku is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, situated on the western shore of the Caspian Sea. The Azerbaijan Grand Prix has been a recurring fixture on the Formula 1 calendar, featuring a fast street circuit around the city center and historic Old Town landmarks.

The entertainment lineup highlights Baku's strategy of pairing international motorsport with high-profile music performances. Separately, music producer Pavel Rudchenko previously addressed Valery Meladze's decision to continue performing in Russia, noting that concerts in the country remain financially lucrative for the artist.
