Streaming platform Prime Video is preparing a new space opera television series adapting James S. A. Corey's book saga The Captive's War.
The project follows the platform's major success with The Expanse, which became a flagship sci-fi show for the streaming service after being rescued from cancellation on the SYFY network.
The upcoming production comes directly from the creators of The Expanse, adapting the literary series known in original release as The Captive's War, or La Guerra de los Cautivos in Spanish. The adaptation aims to expand the scale of television science fiction to an even larger scope.

Literary Origin and Plot Context
The literary saga launched in 2024 with the publication of the first novel, The Mercy of Gods. The narrative continued in April 2026 with the second book, The Faith of Beasts, while a third novel in the series remains pending publication.
The story focuses on humanity facing the Carryx, a massive alien empire that conquers other species across space and forces them to compete constantly to demonstrate their ongoing usefulness.
Alien Empires and Nanomachine Threats
The Carryx are not necessarily the greatest danger facing human characters in the story. A more disturbing threat emerges from the Swarm, a complex network of nanomachines created by a mysterious enemy of the Carryx empire.
The Swarm operates far differently from conventional military forces. The nanomachines can invade the bodies of other living species, integrate directly with their consciousness, and control their memories, personalities, and physical forms.
Adaptation Challenges and Franchise Prospects
Producers face a significant technical challenge in bringing The Captive's War to screen due to a galaxy inhabited by numerous non-human alien species. Creating believable alien characters that evoke genuine viewer empathy remains a major hurdle for the adaptation.
Although the show will inevitably draw comparisons to The Expanse, the scale of its universe and threats could make previous space villains look far less dangerous. If Prime Video successfully translates the varied alien species and lore to the screen, the adaptation could launch a major franchise that transforms the space opera genre.
