Spanish actor Pedro Alonso has set a premiere date for his next television project after wrapping up his role as Berlin in the "Money Heist" spinoff series of the same name. His new show, the Mexican production "El Juicio," arrives on Prime Video on September 11.
The eight-episode dramatic thriller was announced two years ago and is produced by Amazon MGM Studios alongside 3Pas Studios, Visceral and Reclaim Entertainment. Alonso had said he had no intention of taking on another project around that time, explaining that after two and a half demanding but stimulating years, he had decided not to act in anything during 2024, until the script for "El Juicio" reached him.
A story based on a real crime
The production is based on a real crime that took place in Mexico. Eugenio Derbez plays the lead role, a father determined to confront a justice system that appears stacked against him. The plot of "El Juicio" follows a young woman and her father fighting for justice after a sexual assault, as they take on a failing judicial system and the powerful father of the attacker, who is determined to protect his son.
Alonso plays the father of the young man accused of the assault, a successful businessman who uses his position, money and influence to protect his son and try to stem the consequences of his actions.
Alonso said it was not easy to tackle a story about such a delicate subject without falling into the temptation of oversimplifying it. He said the story was not only about the pursuit of justice but about something structural and systemic, and that he was confident the series would spark a necessary discussion. He added that he was glad to have joined the project helmed by Derbez, whom he respects and admires.
Cast and crew
The rest of the cast includes Karla Gaytan and Iker Sanchez Solano, who play the children of the two lead characters. They are joined by Hector Jimenez, Ximena Ayala, Luisa Huertas, Dominika Paleta, Tete Espinoza, Ari Brickman, Joaquin Garduno, Diego Peniche, Eduardo Minett, Humberto Busto and Antonio de la Vega.
Filming took place in Puebla and Mexico City. The series was developed with showrunner Daniel Krauze and directed by Mexican filmmakers Roberto Sneider and Jorge Michel Grau alongside Spanish director Belen Macias.
