Paros: Greek Island Experts Recommend to Retirees

Paros, an island in Greece's Cycladic archipelago, has been recommended by travel experts as an ideal destination for retirees and other travellers who prefer a slower pace of life and a mild climate, according to the Daily Express.

Paros sits near the far more famous islands of Santorini and Mykonos, but it remains noticeably calmer and less crowded than its neighbours, while offering scenery just as picturesque.

The island has 39 beaches in total, ranging from quiet, almost deserted coves to developed stretches of coastline with beach clubs and water sports, meaning families with children and travellers seeking solitude can both find a spot to suit them.

Easier walking than Santorini

Unlike Santorini, with its steep cliffs, Paros has much gentler terrain, so visitors can stroll through the whitewashed streets of Parikia or Naousa without much effort. That ease of movement is one of the reasons the island is so often chosen by older travellers, the report noted.

The island's standout attraction is Naousa, on the northern coast. Once a fishing village, it has developed into one of the most appealing towns in the Aegean Sea, known for its stylish boutiques, lively evening scene and colourful harbour.

Quieter escapes on and off the island

Travellers seeking even more peace and quiet are advised to visit Lefkes, a scenic mountain village that served as the island's capital during the medieval period. The report's authors suggested arriving as early as possible, before tour buses reach the village.

Another good option for those who value solitude is the neighbouring island of Antiparos, described as an ideal destination for a day trip, particularly on days when Parikia and Naousa fill up with holidaymakers.

Mild weather into autumn

Paros holds warm weather well into October, with temperatures reaching as high as 26°C, and skies are mostly sunny from mid-spring through to mid-autumn, meaning trips can be planned without much worry about rain.

Another islander's repeat choice

Separately, a traveller who has visited more than 25 Greek islands previously revealed which one he consistently returns to. He said the island's appeal lies in its combination of beaches, ancient history and a well-preserved medieval centre, singling out its UNESCO-listed old town and a town built around a hillside temple. He added that the island also has a long swimming season, with comfortable weather lasting until mid-October.
