Nieves Álvarez Shares Plastic Wrap Trick for Dark Circles

Spanish model Nieves Álvarez has shared a simple beauty trick on social media using plastic wrap and eye cream to reduce dark circles and signs of facial fatigue.

The model and television presenter explained to her followers that the delicate skin around the eyes is often the first part of the face to display exhaustion, dullness or a poor night of sleep. To combat days when tiredness is difficult to disguise, she relies on a quick home technique requiring only two items that most people already have in their cupboards.

Álvarez demonstrated the routine in a video posted to her official social media channels. Opening the clip, she asked viewers what she does with plastic wrap and eye contour cream before explaining how altering her application method provides intensive care on demanding days.

The cling film application technique

The first step of the routine involves applying a generous amount of eye contour cream across the under-eye area. Álvarez recommends spreading the product thickly, treating it almost like a dedicated facial mask rather than a standard daily layer.

After applying the cream, she covers the area with an under-eye patch or small pieces of cut transparent plastic wrap. The physical barrier remains over the skin for a period of time to keep the moisturizing product in direct, continuous contact with the under-eye area.

In her demonstration, Álvarez used the Eye Lifting Cream from her own cosmetic firm, Nieves Beauty, which retails for €42.99. However, she emphasized that the value of the trick rests in how the product is applied rather than the specific cream selected.

Anyone wanting to try the technique can use their regular daily eye cream, provided their skin tolerates the formula well. The skin around the human eyes, known as the periorbital area, is significantly thinner than the rest of the face and contains fewer oil glands, making it particularly susceptible to rapid moisture loss and visible signs of fatigue.

How occlusion improves skin hydration

Placing clear plastic wrap over the face may look unusual, but the approach relies on the established skincare principle of occlusion. Covering skin after applying a cosmetic product creates a physical seal that helps prevent transepidermal water loss while the barrier remains in place.

By trapping moisture against the surface, the occlusive layer keeps hydrating ingredients active against the skin for longer periods. Consequently, the main benefit of the technique relates to boosting surface hydration and overall skin appearance rather than instantly erasing deep dark circles or wrinkles.

Dark circles often appear more prominent when the skin is dehydrated, as the underlying blood vessels become more visible through thin surface tissue. When skin receives deep hydration, it appears more luminous, plump and rested, making the technique a helpful option before attending an event, following long travel or after a restless night.

Precautions and practical alternatives

Álvarez mentioned in her post that she sometimes falls asleep while wearing the plastic wrap treatment overnight. However, she noted that the technique does not need to become a permanent nightly habit.

Because the skin around the eyes is exceptionally sensitive, users should approach the method with caution and practice it only occasionally. Testing the technique with a product already known to be compatible with one's skin helps prevent redness or irritation.

For those who find cutting household plastic wrap in front of a mirror impractical, reusable silicone eye patches offer a convenient, washable alternative that creates the same seal. Once the covering is removed, users simply massage any remaining cream gently into the skin.

While the simple trick will not magically erase dark circles overnight, it provides an accessible extra boost of hydration whenever the eyes require special care.
