Actor Nathan Fillion has confirmed that an animated revival of the sci-fi television series Firefly is still moving forward five months after its announcement.

The project was first revealed in March as an animated continuation of the original show, but it currently lacks an attached platform, causing progress to move slowly while producers seek a buyer.

The animated series is being developed by Collision33, Fillion's production company, in collaboration with 20th Television Animation. Much of the original cast is expected to return to voice their respective roles alongside Fillion.

Returning cast members slated for the revival include Alan Tudyk, Gina Torres, Jewel Staite, Morena Baccarin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Adam Baldwin.

Despite the lack of a distributor at this stage, Fillion emphasised that the project has by no means been abandoned.

Cult legacy of the franchise

Firefly originally aired in the early 2000s as a space western drama. Despite receiving strong critical acclaim, the series was cancelled after just one season of 14 episodes, leaving a passionate audience wanting more.

The dedicated fan base previously demonstrated its influence by campaigning for the 2005 feature film Serenity, which continued the narrative of the short-lived series.

Fillion noted that the history of the franchise demonstrates what a committed community can achieve, expressing confidence that the universe could make history again with the upcoming animated series.
