Streaming platform Netflix has announced that a new documentary film about Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher, titled Schumacher 94: Birth of a Legend, will premiere on October 2, 2026.
Directed by Christine Freitag and produced by LEONINE Documentaries, the feature-length project focuses on Schumacher's first world championship victory. It chronicles how the 25-year-old German driver transformed from a promising contender into a world champion during the 1994 Formula 1 season. The upcoming release is Netflix's second documentary about the driver, following the 2021 film Schumacher.
According to the official synopsis, the 1994 season marked a turning point in Formula 1 history. Schumacher launched an unprecedented career by winning the opening Grand Prix of the year in Brazil, setting off a wave of global popularity known as Schumania. The synopsis notes that the championship became one of the most dramatic and exciting in the sport's history, marked both by high-stakes racing and by allegations of vehicle manipulation and unsportsmanlike conduct on the track.
The production also addresses the tragic weekend at the Imola Grand Prix in San Marino, where drivers Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger both lost their lives in fatal accidents.
Family recollections and personal life
Schumacher's wife Corinna and other individuals close to the driver appear in the documentary to offer personal recollections from that period. According to the synopsis, family members and friends describe him as an uncompromising fighter behind the wheel, while highlighting that he was a sensitive and empathetic person away from the circuit.
Corinna Schumacher, who is described as having always served as his emotional support, reflects in the film on the beginnings of an unusual love story between the couple that continues to the present day.
