Streaming service Apple TV has released the trailer for Brothers, a new comedy series in which Hollywood actors Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson play fictional versions of themselves.
The narrative centers on the pair's long-standing friendship, which faces a major test when they decide to move their families onto McConaughey's ranch in Texas. The cohabitation comes after the wedding of Harrelson's daughter falls through. While living together on the property, the two actors uncover a major family secret revealing that they are actually brothers.
Brothers will premiere on the Apple TV streaming service on September 23, 2026. The initial season will feature eight episodes, with the first two episodes releasing simultaneously on the launch date.
Real-life family theory
The storyline of the comedy series is inspired by a real-life theory that McConaughey and Harrelson publicly discussed in 2023, suggesting that they might be biological brothers.
At the time, McConaughey explained that he and Harrelson had maintained a close friendship over many years. During a joint family vacation in Greece, McConaughey's mother told the group that she had known Harrelson's father around the time Harrelson was conceived.
McConaughey noted that his mother placed a deliberate emphasis on the word known, leading those present to infer that she was referring to a past intimate connection. However, neither actor has taken a DNA test to formally verify or disprove the theory.
Previous television work
The new project reunites McConaughey and Harrelson, who previously shared the screen in 2014 during the acclaimed first season of the HBO crime drama True Detective. In that series, the pair earned widespread acclaim playing Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, two Louisiana State Police detectives investigating a mysterious murder.
Brothers marks a shift into comedy for their partnership, turning their real-life personal friendship and family speculation into a scripted television storyline for Apple's streaming platform.
