Masamune Shirow Comments on New Ghost in the Shell Anime

Original creator Masamune Shirow has shared his thoughts on the new Ghost in the Shell anime series coming from animation house Science SARU in 2026.

Original creator Masamune Shirow has commented on the new Ghost in the Shell anime series scheduled to debut in 2026. The project promises to be one of the most visually distinct and creatively ambitious iterations of the cyberpunk saga. Science SARU, the animation house known for Dandadan and Scott Pilgrim DecollaThis, is animating the new series.

Shirow shared a candid message with fans following the release of a teaser trailer for the show. He reflected on the evolution of the franchise, which has jumped across different timelines, visual styles, and philosophical tones over the years.

“As for anime adaptation, this new The Ghost in the Shell marks the fourth version that follows those of Oshii, Kamiyama and Kise,” Shirow said. He explained that depending on how previous titles are categorized, the project could also be viewed as a tenth adaptation. “Alternatively, if you separate Ghost in The Shell and Innocence, we classify the SAC series in Seasons 1, 2 and Solid State Society, Divide presents itself in its series together with the new film and Sac_2045 uniforms in seasons 1 and 2, this would be the tenth adaptation in general.”

Franchise Generations and Production Crew

Shirow framed the upcoming anime as a complete generational change driven by a new creative team. “Considering the change in production personnel, you could even consider this first episode of a second generation,” he said. “The original manga is quite old, so I ask for your understanding on that point (sorry!). Having said that, I sincerely hope that this will again be a pleasant visual experience in some form.”

The production features Moko-chan directing for the first time, with Toh Enjoe writing the scripts. Shuhei Handa is managing both the character designs and the main direction of animation. Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, and Production IG are producing the project.

Visual Approach and Release Details

No cast members have been announced, and the exact release date remains unconfirmed beyond the planned 2026 debut. Footage from the short teaser movie suggests the series takes a visual approach that approaches Shirow's original manga aesthetics and tone without sacrificing the foresight edge of the franchise.
