Marina Ershova describes warm welcome at Guatemalan market

Russian travel blogger Marina Ershova has detailed her experience visiting a local market in Guatemala with her boyfriend, reporting that vendors greeted them with broad smiles upon learning they were from Russia.

Writing on her personal blog on the Dzen platform, Ershova said market traders immediately noticed the couple as they walked through the stalls and asked where they were from.

When the travelers replied that they were Russian, locals recognized the Spanish pronunciation of the country name, repeating the phrase with excitement. Ershova said vendors smiled broadly and showed delight, acting as though the couple had brought news directly from distant Russia rather than simply stopping to buy a few bananas.

Market atmosphere and tourist pricing

Despite their warm welcome, stallholders refused to offer discounts to foreign shoppers. Ershova noted humorously that while the vendors were glad to celebrate Russia, business remained business when it came to reducing prices.

The traveler compared the vibrant marketplace to an art exhibition, describing colorful mounds of fruit surrounded by stalls selling meat, vegetables, clothing, spices, and unfamiliar local goods. She added that visiting traditional markets allows travelers to see how locals live without the feeling of an artificial tourist environment.

Addressing safety in the area, Ershova called the market one of the calmest places in Guatemala. She said the worst hazard they had encountered was a vendor quoting a slightly higher price than a local would pay, describing tourist price markups as a truly universal practice.

Travel context and background

Guatemala is a Central American nation known for its volcanic landscapes, Mayan heritage, and traditional open-air markets. Dzen is a major Russian blogging and content platform where independent creators publish travel diaries, lifestyle guides, and personal reports.

The market update follows an earlier publication by Ershova detailing her overall travel costs in Guatemala, in which she advised visitors against skimping on experiences while exploring the country.
