By the way, we remember the best films of Venice in history.
“Rashomon” (1950)
The classic black and white film of Akira Kurosawa, the most famous Japanese director who once raised the prestige of Japanese cinema in general. The detective crime drama is set in the 11th century and tells the story of a dead samurai from four different perspectives: a robber, a samurai’s wife, a woodcutter, and the spirit of the slain.
“The Promise” (1955)
Danish drama, gallery of different attitudes towards the same God, reflections on religion and its necessity in our lives, where the doctor believes in miracles more than the priest.
“Last Year in Marienbad” (1961)
The detective drama by Alain Resnais (“Hiroshima”) is set in a French hotel where a young man tries to convince a girl that they met a year ago and agreed to meet again. But he doesn’t remember (or pretends to remember) that. At one time this picture was called “expression” and “manifesto”, and the costumes of the characters were developed by Coco Chanel!
“Beauty of the Day” (1967)
Drama starring Catherine Deneuve. A devoted wife and respected mistress one day decides on an incredible and completely immoral experiment, she secretly starts working in a brothel, where she gets the name “Beauty of the Day”. And none of her loved ones can even guess how she really spends her days!
“Before the Rain” (1994)
A military drama that once won five awards at the Venice Film Festival. The main character is a photographer who returns to his native village after many years of wandering around the world’s hot spots. Will she be able to accept a new reality filled with hatred and vendetta?
“Michael Collins” (1996)

“The Monsoon Wedding” (2001)
The comedy melodrama Mira Nair (“New York, I love you”) chronicles how a large Indian family reunites for the wedding of 24-year-old Aditi and her American chosen one. True, he does not know what secrets his bride is hiding. Such a brilliant story!
“Brokeback Mountain” (2005)
The Ang Lee (“Life of Pi”) drama that everyone seems to know. After Venice, the movie starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal won four more Golden Globes and three more Oscars. Against the backdrop of the picturesque expanses of Wyoming, the story of a complex relationship between two men unfolds: a rancher’s sidekick and a rodeo cowboy. Their meeting was by chance, but they soon realized that they could not live without each other.
“Lust” (2007)
Another magnificent work by Ang Lee, set in Shanghai during WWII. An influential politician falls madly in love with a friend of his young wife. Every day this evil bond goes further and the passion grows stronger.
“The Wrestler” (2008)
Sports drama Darren Aronofsky (“Requiem for a Dream”) with Mickey Rourke. The main character – Randy “The Ram” Robinson – was a star of the ’80s, but after suffering a heart attack in one of the matches, he became a pale copy of himself. Unable to start a new life and improve relations with his daughter, he decided to join the war despite everything, knowing that it could cost him his life.
“Somewhere” (2010)
Sofia Coppola (“Lost in Translation”) comedy drama about family and fame with Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning. A movie star in crisis and a life of debauchery bring her 11-year-old daughter out of depression.

“Rome” (2018)
One of the main discoveries that year was Alfonso Cuarón’s semi-autobiographical Mexican drama. The life story of an ordinary middle-class family in Mexico City in the 1970s: “90% of the scenes presented in the movie were pulled from my memory. We are talking about the period that shaped me and the whole country. It was the time of the formation of Mexico.
“The Joker” (2019)
A modern classic by Todd Phillips and a utility performance by Joaquin Phoenix. In the early 1980s, Gotham comedian Arthur Fleck lives with his sick mother, who taught him to “walk with a smile” since childhood. It’s just that the world is cruel and it changes the rules of the game.
“Land of the Nomads” (2020)
Oscar for Best Picture, Director and Actress. Chloe Zhao and Frances McDormand gave us perhaps one of the best dramas of our time. After the closure of the drywall factory, 60-year-old Fern is unemployed and without a livelihood. After loading her poor belongings into a van, she now becomes a modern nomad – one of the people who travels from state to state in search of seasonal work.
