Pilots and cabin crew have uncovered some of the industry’s flight secrets, including what really happens in the cockpit and why you should never take your shoes off on an airplane.
Airline staff succumbed to cat calls and official airline competition, saying cleanliness standards were uneven and people “often die on flights.”
In the Reddit thread, the airline and airport staff exposed all the inside gossip and even talked about what actually happened in the cockpit.
Insiders also said that flight attendants would hang coffee filters next to guests who especially smelled, and adjust the air conditioning to different temperatures to prevent the odor from spreading into the cabin.
Flight attendants and pilots reveal some of their biggest flight secrets on Reddit
According to those on the wire, many pilots are “surfing Facebook”, “watching movies” and “meowing on the airlines” to “break the monotony of work”.
“The work consists of hours of boredom interspersed with moments of pure terror,” one pilot said.
“We can run smoothly in the rear and vow to dodge lightning in the cockpit or figure out what to do if something goes wrong.
“People really have no idea how far drones can fly, you don’t go down when you lose power.
“The main problem with the loss of engine power is that you can’t adjust anything on the descent, so you really only have one chance.”
Others explained that the plane could leave the airport even if things didn’t go well.
“Often on airplanes, equipment breaks down, it’s just the nature of the business and things break. We can’t always fix it, so there’s a confirmed list of things that can break,” he said.
Adding these could be something “irrelevant” like a “broken brake temperature sensor” or something that means they need more crew, like navigation systems that aren’t working properly.
But they weren’t the only ones divulging trade secrets, flight crews explained why they never take off their shoes in flight, and it has nothing to do with scent.
“Airplanes have very fast turnaround times at airports and if someone vomits in the hallway without being properly cleaned, it’s not cleaned,” one woman said.
Another added: “And we usually only have one mat on board, which means that the toilets, kitchen and other spills are managed by the same person.”
“People pee on the bathroom floor all the time, so cloth is used everywhere,” another explained.
“And the vacuum cleaner is low on power, so it only removes surface dirt,” said another.

When customers die, cabin crew should pretend to be asleep, some said:
“I was on a flight where a passenger literally vomited into the seat, in front of the backrest and the person next to him in the middle. He was bad. Never think of anything in an ad as something completely unclean,” added another.
Others shared moments that made them tremble.
“One day I was sitting in the passenger seat on the way home and someone in the back seat took off their shoes and socks and used my armrest for their feet. It was very disturbing,” one woman said.
What are the “secrets” in the “most common” flight?
1 – Pilots use their phones and browse Facebook during flight
2 – People die on flights and disguise themselves as flight crew
3 – Planes are not cleaned between flights and are “disgusting”
4 – Pilots use emergency radio frequencies to search for the competition
5 – Planes usually fly even if their instruments are broken.
‘I’m always shocked when people do this or put their dirty feet on the back of my chair. I always want to sneeze inside but I really can’t,” she said.
One flight attendant said that when people die in flight, staff try to make it less obvious, which could include wearing glasses or making the person appear asleep.
“You better be calm because people would panic if they knew there was a running dead body, and at 20,000 feet people don’t need to panic.”
Other staff said that pilots and cabin crew often lied about the reason for delays.
“Instead of saying it’s a mechanical failure, we’ll blame it again, so we don’t need to look for accommodation if people miss connecting flights.”
The most common “stealth” personnel to emerge involved the surveillance frequency in the radio, something tuned to check for the presence of a distressed aircraft.
“It’s full of people getting sick and farting and harassing each other,” one man said.
“And by cat noises I mean meoooooooowwwwww.”
