Dame Deborah James’ podcast host Lauren Mahon reflected on the cancer activist’s “beautiful, uplifting and sometimes theatrical” funeral, praising the “calmness” of her 40-year-old family.
Lauren, 37, admitted on Instagram that she wasn’t ready to make a “farewell post” but wanted to comment on “Our Lady’s day” after joining. Special service on Wednesdays at the church of Santa Maria in Barnes.
Dame Deborah, mother of two, who became known as Bowelbabe after using her podcast host and social media to raise £7m for charity, died last month at age 40 after being diagnosed with cancer in 2016.

Lauren, 37, admitted that she wasn’t ready to make a “farewell post” on Instagram after attending a private service at St Mary’s Church in Barnes on Wednesday, but wanted to comment on “Our Lady’s Day”. In the picture to the right, she added, many people who loved Deborah held her hand tightly at her funeral, she added.

Lauren also shared a photo of her service order. Lauren and Dame Deborah hosted the podcast “You, Me and The Big C” with Steve Bland, the widow of their friend Rachel Bland, who died of breast cancer in 2018.

Elsewhere, Lorraine Kelly paid tribute to her “best friend” Dame Deborah.
TV presenters Kelly and Roslin, both friends of Dame Deborah, watched as they walked out of church with relatives wearing a white flower tiara. Tom Fletcher and his podcaster wife, Giovanna, were spotted holding hands as they walked away.
Kelly, who burst into tears on her show Lorraine when James’ death was announced in June, said, “Dear friend, your funeral was beautiful today. Your children and husband made the most heartfelt and beautiful gifts. You would be so proud. I miss you, you fantastic, funny and passionate force of nature.’
Family friend and classically trained jazz singer Natalie Rushdie, married to writer Salman Rushdie’s son Zafar, performed the musical Tell Me It’s Not True from the Blood Brothers, while celebrities such as McFly’s Tom Fletcher and Gaby Roslin attended.

After the service, the family was driven out of St Mary’s Church in Barnes, South West London, bowing their heads for a special vigil, while a wicker coffin emblazoned with a rose named after Dame Deborah was driven away. Father David Cooke stood at the door to bid farewell to the mourners.
Dame Deborah, a former vice principal, was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2016 and has kept her nearly one million Instagram followers updated about her treatments.
Her candid posts about her progress and diagnosis, including videos of her dancing during her treatment, were praised by both the public and the media.
Dame Deborah announced in early May that she stopped active treatment and looks forward to spending her final days at her parents’ home in Woking, Surrey.

BBC podcast host You, Me And The Big C has raised around £7m for cancer research in the last months, and that amount has continued to rise after his death.
Dame Deborah became a lady for her “tireless” work in raising awareness about the disease, in honor of the Duke of Cambridge, who joined her family at home for afternoon tea and champagne.
His death was announced by his family on 28 June with the message that he died in peace.
