According to a study, renters now believe they will only join the property ladder at 40, due to the cost of living crisis.

Bringing a new “generation of tenants” to life, a quarter of current tenants believe they can only buy a home at age 50 and 13% believe they may even be on the verge of retirement before leaving the lease.

The study of 2,000 adults, who are currently renting or have rented in the past, also found that nearly half (48%) of renters are currently unable to pay a deposit.

And more than a third (34%) attribute the reason why it has become even more difficult to secure their own housing to the rising cost of living.

Another in ten (11%) find it easier to rent in the area they want to live in, but cannot afford to buy there.

It also found that two thirds (67%) of tenants reduced their spending due to the rising cost of living, while 52% ate less.

One in six people find living with others stressful and 17% have known roommates

Others have vacationed less, cycled more to their destination, or sold personal items they no longer need.

The study, commissioned by NatWest’s “Housemate” bill-sharing app, also found that 16% of renters find living with other people stressful.

And 17% lived with “difficult” roommates, a quarter even had to ask for the intervention of the landlord.

Leaving dirty dishes tops the list of irritating roommates habits, followed by not cleaning and being persecuted for your share of household bills.

Consequently, the main qualities tenants look for in a flatmate are cleanliness (61%), respect (58%) and responsibility (52%).

However, it’s not just incompatible roommates that mean tenants crave to climb the property ladder, with seven out of ten wishing one day to have a place they could call home.

Of those who want to buy, more than half (54%) believe they will be better off financially in the long run and 31% would simply want more space, according to the OnePoll study.

A NatWest spokesperson said, “Renting with roommates can be a tricky business, but splitting the bills shouldn’t be part of the problem.

“Since today’s tenants can be tenants longer than ever, we want to help.

Roommate is our free app that allows you to easily check common household expenses and take the first steps towards owning your home. ”
