Downton Abbey is saying goodbye to Maggie Smith. Although the actor left the project during his lifetime, his character will play a special role.
Speaking to TVLine, Downton Abbey executive producer Gareth Neame talked about the new movie, which will be released in September 2025. It will be a tribute to Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, played by Maggie Smith.
According to the plot, the Countess died at the end of the second part. “The fact that Dame Maggie herself was dead added to the urgency of a story we had planned long before she died. The Dowager’s loss seems even more significant now. When you see actors playing characters mourning the death of the head of the family, I also see actors on the show mourning the death of the head of the family, and it feels more real and more meaningful,” Neame said.
Maggie Smith decided to leave the project because she felt it was unreasonable to pursue the role of old lady Violet. According to the actor, his character is supposed to be 110 years old. According to the producers, he accepted the Countess’ death easily.
The Oscar-winning actor passed away at the age of 89. He devoted seventy years of his life to cinema and became internationally known. His death caused sadness all over the world. Many remembered her roles as Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter and the formidable Dowager Countess in Downton Abbey.
