According to the Associated Press, the Sahara Desert partially sank after heavy rains. Instead of sand dunes and sultry sun, in some places you can find huge puddles and sunken palm trees. The region in southeastern Morocco is one of the driest places in the world and it rarely rains.
Local transport carries tourists and residents across sunken dunes and lakes formed by heavy rains in the desert city of Merzouga.
The Moroccan government said two-day rainfall exceeded the annual average in many regions that receive less than 250 millimeters of rainfall per year. “It’s been 30 to 50 years since we’ve had this much rainfall in such a short period of time,” said Hussine Youabeb, from the General Directorate of Meteorology in Morocco.
Before this, heavy snowfall was effective in South Africa. Angry elements paralyzed traffic on the roads and left local residents stranded in their own cars.
