The 65-year-old actor admitted that he does not like franchises. Viggo Mortensen stated that he avoids taking on roles in these films because the stories are “usually not that good”. At the same time, according to Vanity Fair, he is ready to return to “The Lord of the Rings” if the plot is “right”. But this is an exception.

It’s worth noting that the three Lord of the Rings installments released in the early 2000s helped fuel the emergence of the prequels. “I don’t really seek out or shy away from any genre or budget. I just look for interesting stories,” Mortensen shared.
“For me, it doesn’t matter what the genre is, what the budget is or who is doing it. I will never do a film just because someone is directing it. It has to be relevant. And if I feel like I fit the character, that always comes first. That goes for franchises as well,” he said.
Viggo continued: “If someone came to me with a third or ninth installment of movie X and I thought it was a great character and I wanted to play that character and I thought I could contribute something, I would do it. I’m not against it. But they’re usually not that good. I don’t think they’re usually that good written. They’re pretty predictable. But of course, if I run out of money, there’s always a problem.
The actor recently admitted that he would consider reprising his role as Aragorn in the upcoming Andy Serkis-directed film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt of Gollum. “I love playing this character. I learned a lot from playing him. I really enjoyed it. I would only do it if I was right for it, age-wise and so on. I would only do it if I was right for the character,” he concluded.
