Scandal one day before the Oscars: The film nominated for the award is accused of plagiarism

David Hemingson, director of the 2024 Oscar-nominated comedy The Leftovers, is accused of stealing the script. Variety reports this.

The first person to notice the plagiarism in the film, which was nominated for an Oscar in five categories, was Simon Stephenson, the author of the cartoons Luca and The Adventures of Paddington 2. He claims the plot of “The Leftovers” was “clearly” copied from the “Frisco” script he wrote 11 years ago.

In Simon’s original story, a pediatrician cares for a 15-year-old patient. In David’s comedy The Leftovers, the doctor is replaced by a teacher and the patient is replaced by a boarding school student. The cartoonist also believes that almost all the scenes and dialogues are similar to what he once wrote. But ironically, the scene in which Giamatti’s character recalls plagiarism as a student turned out to be original.

Meanwhile, Simon kept letters stating that the director of the film, which was nominated for Best Original Screenplay this year, received a transcript of the Frisco plot in 2013.
