The bizarre phenomenon came to the fore online after Australian shopper Deanna shared a lengthy post on the Aldi Mums Facebook group, claiming that the chocolate cake mix she bought smelled like ‘car oil’ and the popcorn tasted ‘dirty’.

“Please tell me I’m not alone or I’ll look crazy!” Wrote.

“I bought and made cake mixes, and when I lick the spoon I feel a really strong taste of car oil and it smells like a mechanic. It’s happened more than once.

The online conversation started after shopper Deanna shared a lengthy post on Aldi Mums’ Facebook group, claiming that the chocolate cake mix she bought had “car oil” and the popcorn tasted “dirty.”

Deanna said: “I opened a large pack of popcorn (small multipacks) recently, and some packs tasted like dirt, but some didn’t.

He also claimed that the yogurt-covered packages of raisins had a peculiar taste that was “absolutely disgusting.”

“There’s no number I can call and it’s fine if I tell the workers to offer a refund or get another package, but I wonder why this is happening and I hope it’s not just me,” he wrote.

“I’ve taken others for weird tasting trials and they’ve said the same thing, so I was wondering if it’s happened to anyone else?”

After speculation from others, Deanna insisted the taste was not due to Covid.

“It’s not from Covid because I’ve had others taste it and I’m not pregnant,” she said.

One man asked if Deanna had Covid because the virus usually impairs people’s sense of taste for several weeks.

‘Did you catch Covid? tasting [after] 10 weeks is still not good. I can taste and smell a metallic aroma,” she said.

Another woman said that the flavor of the products was more about the brand than the Aldi supermarkets.

“This has nothing to do with Aldi. It is the way the product is processed and packaged. Please contact the company that produces the product directly,” he said.
