“Cursed places” on world maps: from the voodoo doll market to Samara lake

It seems that the myths about the Bermuda Triangle, Dyatlov Pass and the Loch Ness monster should have remained in the distant past. But the world is full of people who not only continue to believe in the existence of the inexplicable, but even go out to seek them out to find all the answers on their own.

For example, Lome, the capital of the African country Togo, has the scariest market in the world. And all because they sell real voodoo dolls and other weird stuff. For example, you can buy heads, tails and skulls of a wide variety of animals. The assortment also includes body parts of crocodiles, cats, monkeys, vultures, owls, snakes and other creatures. But most importantly, the Akodeseva market is wildly popular with tourists, and many sorcerers and witches fly from other parts of the world just to buy the goods they are interested in.

In this collection, we decided to collect the most terrible and mystical places on world maps, after which even the Bermuda Triangle will seem to you only a legend from childhood.

Local legend has it that tourists, fishermen and foresters get lost in the swamps of the Cherepovets marshes. Moreover, no horror stories prevent neither visitors nor locals from visiting this place. The story of the disappearance of people in the swamps was first recorded in the middle of the 19th century. The events of that period were described in his diary by a Vologda school teacher. So the guy talked about the existence of a certain swamp spirit. For example, an unknown howl was hypnotizing nearby people, luring them into the swamps. This howl deprived the mind, broke the spirit and pushed for unsatisfactory actions. The man went mad with fear and got crowded.

Few people know, but in addition to the Bermuda Triangle, there is another place on world maps where ships are lost. The Devil’s Sea is a triangular shaped area of the Pacific Ocean where both UFOs and ghost schooners meet. According to official information, 24 ships sank in this place in the 1970s and 1980s. After that, the Japanese government set aside funds for a series of studies that showed the geographic location of the triangle to be the culprit. As in any case, the cause of the accident was a strong storm that smashed the ships. Strong winds create air gaps where the ship loses control and sailors see only a wall of water around them. Survival in such conditions is almost impossible.

The famous “suicide forest” in Japan became famous all over the world after Gus Van Sant’s movie starring Matthew McConaughey. The Japanese themselves believe that ghosts live in the forest – the spirits of old people who were left to die there in times of famine. As such, Aokigahara is a popular tourist destination during the day and a “shelter” of suicides at night.

However, it is still not recommended to move alone in the forest. Yet it is easy to meet someone who has decided to end his life.

Samara Lake, Russia

But there are only positive legends around the Blue Lake in Samara. It has a clear round shape and shoots a strong source from the bottom, so no one is in the reservoir. Locals call it the source of youth and eternal life. You can heal all ailments, such as swimming in water where the temperature is only 8 degrees. Although it may seem like a joke at first glance, hundreds of tourists come to the lake every year to swim and take water with them.

Angikuni Lake, Canada

One of the greatest human casualties occurred in Canada in the 1930s. It happened in a village on the shores of Lake Angikuni, where about 2,000 people lived at that time. The protagonist of this tragic story, Canadian hunter Joe Labelle, loved to stay there, but on November 12, 1930, his trip was ended by an accident.

That evening the village was suspiciously quiet. Joe saluted, but no one answered him. The hunter skied all the way to the first house, but there was no one inside. Traveling around the whole village, Joe couldn’t find a soul. Frightened, the hunter rushed to the nearest telegraph office and reported the loss to the police.

Several other hunters nearby said they had seen a strange, bright object in the night sky that seemed somehow connected to the mysterious disappearance of humans. But grim details awaited the police and hunters ahead. The local cemetery turned out to be completely devastated: graves were dug and corpses disappeared. The case has not been resolved to date.
