One woman shared her “revolutionary” trick for cutting onions and preventing tears — and all you need is a damp paper towel.
Australian woman Shilo shared on Facebook that she put a wet towel next to her in order not to cry while chopping the onion.
It works because the chemical is absorbed by the towel instead of your eyes.
An Australian woman named Shilo told Facebook to place a wet paper towel next to her while chopping onions to avoid crying from the chemicals.
Why does the tea towel onion trick work?
This is the chemical sin-Propathanetial S-oxide that onions release when cut.
The vapor of this compound rises in the nose and eyes, causing irritation. It’s unclear whether the liquid in the paper towel actually pulls out or dilutes the acid, but it works.

“Bet you didn’t know,” Shilo wrote.
“The reason you cry when you cut an onion is because the chemical in the onion is drawn into the nearest water source, usually the eyes.”
“This is a hint you can use!”
More than 10,000 people who saw the simple idea were impressed and said they never knew why we were crying for onions.
“I love the fact that no matter how old you are, you can still learn new things. I will definitely do! Thanks!’ noticed a person.
‘YEAH! I can confirm that this has been very helpful,” added another.
Others had their own suggestions for avoiding crying while cutting onions.
One person said, “When you cut the onion, let the water flow next to the sink, that’s how I learned it.”
“I also keep my onions in the refrigerator before slicing, and that helps,” she added.
