A version of the dress, which Irina modeled on the runway, was also worn Kylie Jennerprior to the January 23, 2023 show.
Although the fake lion was made entirely of fabric, resin paint and foam, people were still up in arms. Many argued that the black velvet suit and faux taxidermy still glorified poaching and fur despite being cruelty-free.
But Irina wanted to defend the creators behind the piece in a January 23, 2023 Instagram post. “I support these incredible artists who worked tirelessly, with their hands, using wool, silk and foam, to sculpt this embroidered lion and the image of Pride,” wrote the model mother of one.
“An image that @schiaparelli evokes when exploring the themes of strength. I am honored that I too have been asked to lend my art as a woman for this”. He tagged the creative director of the maison. Daniel Rosenberry complimentary
Her photo carousel showcased the team of stylists and seamstresses who put countless hours into the dress. The post also featured concept sketches of the gown, as well as behind-the-scenes shots of the accessories and close-up details of her shoes, which looked like dark feet with gold toenails.
Schiaparelli also defended her design online, noting that “no animals were harmed in the creation of this look.” The piece was “hand carved foam [and] Faux fur made from wool and silk and hand painted to look as realistic as possible, celebrating the glory of the natural world.
animal model/activist Christie Brinkley was one of many detractors of the dress, describing the look as “sick” and a “stylish false leg” in an Instagram comment reported by news week. He shared, “It looks like the models have taken the rug from cruel hunters and wrapped the severed heads around them to be seen as elegant and beautiful… fur is a symbol of human cruelty and ignorance.”
