This is how Lexus’ innovative heating system works

Life aboard the Lexus RZ is better with design details and technical innovations that enhance comfort and functionality. Radiant heating is a good example of this. The new RZ, Lexus’ first battery-electric model on a dedicated EV platform, is also the first Lexus to use this heating method.

Unlike traditional convection heating systems, which heat the air, the new RZ has two panels at the front of the cab that using infrared radiation to heat only the solid objects around it. For example, the driver and front passenger warm up more quickly than with conventional climate control systems.

Also, consumes about 8% less energyby directing the heat only where it is needed, reducing the load on the climate control system and increasing the range of the vehicle.

This heartwarming innovation is also a great example of how Lexus designers take into account Omotenashi, the Japanese spirit of hospitality. In this context, hospitality refers to making the occupants of the front seats of the RZ feel comfortable, especially on cold days, akin to throwing a blanket over their lap. This is achieved by concealing the two heat radiators at knee height, in the lower part of the dashboard and the steering column. If the driver or passenger physically touches the panel, the temperature is automatically lowered to 43°C to prevent them from getting burned.

The RZ’s radiant heating complements the conventional in-cab climate control (the use of which can be limited when radiant heat is generated), and is also added to the heated seats and steering wheel.

The system is integrated into Lexus Climate Assistant, the multi-zone climate control system that automatically adjusts the heating of the interior, seats and steering wheel, as well as the air conditioning, to ensure optimum thermal comfort for all occupants at all times.
