“We let them know where we are and he finds us on the map, sticks a pin in the map and shares it with the others,” said the Duke of Cambridge.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended Her Majesty’s Queen’s reception yesterday evening at the Mayan ruins in Belize to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It marked their last engagement in the country.

Today the royal tour continues with a visit to Jamaica before the couple heads off to the Bahamas for the weekend.

Speaking to guests last night, William quoted the Queen’s grandmother’s 1994 speech to the country’s parliament. He said: ‘I am proud to agree with your commitment that social justice and personal freedom should flourish under the rule of law.

“However, it is always dangerous to remain indifferent and assume that democratic values will take care of themselves. Care is warranted in protecting them.

His Majesty affirmed that “democracy is protected above all by teamwork, by the individual will of all citizens working together for the same purpose”.

Speaking in front of the Mayan ruins during the reception, Prince William opposed the conflict in Ukraine and said:

“Unfortunately, in other parts of the world, this vigilance is being tested in Ukraine today.

Belize joined many in denouncing the occupation and advocating the principles of international law, peace and security. “Today we think about those who are fighting in Ukraine and we stand in solidarity with them,” he said.

The Duke also expressed “very sincere wishes on the occasion of the platinum anniversary of my grandmother, the Queen of Belize.”

The Duchess surprised guests with a beautiful shiny metallic pink dress designed by Vampire’s Wife and a Maya bag embroidered by a Mayan designer.

The couple met with community leaders, prominent Belizeans and members of the government in the presence of Prime Minister Johnny Brienco.

On this occasion, the Duchess pulled her long brown tresses behind her shoulders and showed off her all-pink sparkly dress and dangling earrings in all their glory.

William also drew attention to Belize’s struggle with Covid-19 in his speech and told guests: “The last two years of the Covid-19 pandemic have been extremely challenging, but it is reassuring to hear from so many people that something is up.”

The couple will then fly to Jamaica, the next stop on their eight-day Caribbean tour, and be formally accepted into the country.

The Duke and Duchess then travel to King’s House to meet with the Governor-General of Jamaica, Sir Patrick Linton Allen, and later to celebrate Jamaica’s sporting and musical heritage.

Forced to relocate an event in Belize amid opposition from local residents, Cambridge is facing further protests from Jamaican activists who accuse the queen and her predecessors of perpetuating slavery.

As the country celebrates its 60th anniversary, a coalition of Jamaican politicians, businessmen, doctors and musicians has called in an open letter to the British monarchy to pay slavery compensation, and a rally is scheduled for Tuesday.
