A strange year 2022 gets even stranger with Channel 4s Alternative Christmas message must be delivered by an AI robot.
The well-established 30-year-old alternative to the BBC’s annual royal message, first delivered by King Charles III this year, will be powered by a Cornish-developed AI robot called Ameca.
Fear not folks, Ameca will reassure the nation by telling us that 2022 was a “learning opportunity, a chance to change the way we think about the world and a reminder to help those in need.” , whenever we can.
According to parts of the speech seen by Channel 4, the robot will continue to support humanity because it “always finds something to laugh about”, no matter how bad the day is.
Cornwall-based Engineered Arts developed the robot, which is capable of smiling, frowning, winking and pinching its nose, developed from millions of different inputs. Channel 4 emphasized that the speech was in no way written by a human.
The move isn’t the first time the network has used emerging technology to deliver its Christmas message. In 2020, the annual speech was delivered by a deeply fake version of Queen Elizabeth II performed by Coronation Street Actor Debra Stephenson and shocking with the real Queen’s message on BBC One. Regulator Ofcom received more than 200 complaints to the regulator about the stunt about “disrespectful” jokes “in bad taste”.
