Indonesian action comedy The big 4directed by Timo Tjahjanto, debuted at number two on the Netflix Global Non-English Film Charts for the week of December 12-18 with 16.4 million hours watched.

The Netflix original also made the top 10 country film charts in 53 countries, including Indonesia, where it is the number one film. Spanish drama God’s curved linesdirected by Oriol Paulo is currently in its second week of release as the number one non-English language film in the world.

“What a great honor to have my work recognized around the world, a special Indonesian story that is very close to my heart,” said Tjahjanto. “It’s exciting to see the story resonate and travel the world, powered by Netflix.”

The big 4 follows a lead to a remote tropical island, only to discover his true identity as the leader of a group of assassins. The cast is led by Abimana Aryasatya, Putri Marino, Arie Kriting, Lutesha and Kristo Immanuel.

Tjahjanto is one of Indonesia’s most famous action directors. As one half of the Mo brothers together with Kimo Stamboel, he shot action films among other things Macabre and Murderer. As a solo director, his credits include Headshot, may the devil take you away and The night is coming for us.

Netflix also announced the release date for the upcoming Indonesian movie Dear David, which will begin streaming on February 9, 2023. Directed by Lucky Kuswandi, the coming-of-age drama follows a straight-A scrapper whose future may be in jeopardy when her secret fantasy blog is revealed to her entire school. The two films are part of a large series of Indonesian originals announced by Netflix earlier this year.
