Le Monde: Another painting from the Morozov brothers’ collection seized in France
“Icons of Contemporary Art” Exhibition
The French authorities decided to confiscate another painting from the collection of Mikhail and Ivan Morozov, a portrait of Valentin Serov’s businessman Timofey Morozov. This was reported by the French newspaper Le Monde.
The canvas belongs to MAGMA, the Moscow Avangard Art Museum, created by Russian entrepreneur Vyacheslav Kantor. After the start of military special operations in Ukraine, the European Union imposed personal sanctions on Kantor.
“Portrait of Timofey Morozov” by Valentin Serov
It was previously reported that Russian billionaire Pyotr Aven, who is also on the sanctions lists, confiscated Pyotr Konchalovsky’s “Gray self-portrait”, but the fate of Valentin Serov’s work remained in question. The Russian Embassy in Paris at that time refused to detain any painting, explaining the impossibility of immediate delivery to their homeland due to logistical problems.
Both canvases were loaned to the French Fondation Louis Vuitton for the Contemporary Art Icons Exhibition taking place in Paris from September 22, 2021 to April 3, 2022.
Previously, it was known that in South Korea, due to logistics problems, paintings from the collections of Russian museums participated in the exhibition “Kandinsky, Malevich and the Russian avant-garde: the art of the revolution” at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts. Seoul is stuck.
