With 90.8% of the votes, Marine Tondelier became the new national secretary of the Europe Ecologie-Les Verts party on Saturday 10 December. At 36 he succeeds Julien Bayou. The deputy resigned from his post as party chief on 26 September, after being accused of psychological violence by several of his former comrades. If Marine Tondelier’s score suggests that she has succeeded in convincing her party’s unanimity, the new leader of the Greens does not intend to stop there and will face many challenges.
EELV, a destabilized party
“A new page opens. We will return to the offensive, with a clear, ambitious, collective political line”., said Marine Tondelier after his election. It will take at least all of this for this former Science Po Lille student to lead her party. After the poor results in the presidential elections, the elimination of Yannick Jadot with 4.63% of the votes in the first round, and the accusations of psychological violence against the former national secretary of the Greens, Marine Tondelier inherits a destabilized party. But the ecologist isn’t close to a challenge. He notably works as an opposition adviser to Hénin-Baumonta commune near Lille, led by National Rally (RN) mayor Steeve Briois.
Marine Tondelier, European ambitions
If she was able to reunite the Greens, Marine Tondelier now hopes to restore their image. Of States General of Ecology, which will be held in January 2023he especially shared his desire to do so “reconnecting with the working classes and peripheral France”. Furthermore, it has already affirmed its independence from Nupes (New Ecological and Social Union of Peoples) by announcing its ambitions at the European level. “We will present an environmental list to European women”he said after taking office. The new leader of the Greens therefore has his work cut out for him.
